Vows

There are many ways to exchange wedding vows.  The following is a sample of traditional and not so traditional vows.

STYLE 1   In the presence of God and before these witnesses, I, ___, take you, ___, to be my wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health; in joy and in sorrow; to love and to cherish; and to be faithful to you alone, as long as we both shall live.

STYLE 2    ___, I take you to be my wife/husband. I give you may hand; I give you my love; I give you myself. I pledge to stand by you as long as we live. Come, travel with me, and share the road both when it is hard and when it is easy.

STYLE 3    Before our family and friends, I, ___ , take you, ___, to be my wife/husband; to laugh with you in joy; to grieve with you in sorrow; to support you in sickness and in health; to grow with you in love; and to be faithful to you alone, as long as we both shall live.

STYLE 4    I take you to be my wife/husband, and these things I promise you: I will be faithful to you and honest with you. I will respect, trust, help, and care for you. I will share my life with you. I will forgive you, and I will try with you better to understand ourselves and the world; through the best and worst of what is to come, until death parts us.

STYLE 5    I, ___, take you, ___ , to be my husband/wife. I solemnly promise that I will be with you always. I love you now and wish to grow with you. I promise to love you in times of celebration and times of sadness; in times of pleasure and times of anger; in times of health and time of sickness. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.

STYLE 6    I, ___, take you, ___, to be my husband/wife in a covenant of love and comfort, forgiveness and faithfulness; in times of ease or unease, whether we are rich or poor, in sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live. This is my solemn vow.

STYLE 7    With great joy, I ___, take you, ___, to be my husband/wife. I promise to love you and cherish you always; to honor you and to comfort you in the nighttime of your fears; to stand by you in sorrow and in joy, in hardship and in prosperity; to listen to you with respect and to speak to you with truth; to encourage your dreams and to celebrate your achievements. I promise to make our home a place of love and welcome. I will be faithful to you today and all of our days together.

STYLE 8    ___, I take you to be my wife/husband from this time onward; to join with you and to share all that is to come, to give and to receive, to speak and to listen, to inspire and to respond, and in all circumstances of our life together to be loyal to you with my whole life and with all my being until death parts us.

STYLE 9    ___, I come today to give you my love, to give you my heart and my hope for our future together. I promise to bring you joy, to be at home with your spirit and to learn to love you more each day, through all the days of our lives. My love for you is endless and eternal.

STYLE 10    All that I am and all that I have--I offer to you in joy, in service, in sacred union. All that I have been and all that I shall be–I bring into your midst for your blessing, for your clear reflection, for your blessing. All that I am and all that I have–I entrust to your heart on this day and tomorrow and always.

STYLE 11    I,____ choose you, ___, in the presence of this community, to be my wife/husband from this time forward. To love you; to be a comfort and safe haven in your life; to hold you close; to listen deeply when you are sad or angry; to learn compassion with you; to nourish you with gentleness; to uphold you with strength; to love you as you grow older; to never take you for granted, but always to give thanks for your presence.

STYLE 12    These are my promises to you: that I will love you freely, as the sky loves the bird. That I will love you grandly with my emotions, words and all my actions. That I will love you purely, with my honor and best intentions. That I will love you truly with my finest kindness and my deepest care. That I will love you always from this day forward...endlessly, forever.

STYLE 13    I, ___, take you, ____, to be my wife/husband. To stand with you in the grand love that binds us, to honor you, to change with you, to learn compassion with you, to rejoice with you, to be kind. I promise you this from my heart and from my soul.

STYLE 14 I, ___, take you, ___, from this day forward and into the long forever to be my wife/husband. I promise always to love you, to honor you, to adore you, to give thanks for the gift of your presence. You are the one I admire; you are the one I adore; you are the one I choose now and forever.

STYLE 15    On this special day, I give to you in the presence of God and all these witnesses, my pledge to stay by your side, in sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow, as well as through the good times and the bad.

STYLE 16    I promise to love you without reservation, comfort you in times of distress, encourage you to achieve all of your goals, laugh with you and cry with you, grow with you in mind and spirit, always be open and honest with you, and cherish you for as long as we both shall live.

STYLE 17   ___, I promise to love you above all others, and to value your friendship as a precious gift. I look forward to raising our family, and building our relationship, under the care and guidance of God. I promise to stand beside you in sickness or health, in times of prosperity and decline, in peace and in turmoil, as long as we both shall live.

STYLE 18   ___, all that I am, and all that I have, I offer to you in love and in joy. From this day forward I will love and comfort you, hold you close, treasure you above all others, and remain faithful to you all the days of our lives.

STYLE 19   I’ve been dreaming of this day my entire life and I'm so happy to share this moment with you.  As your husband/wife, I vow to stand by your side through all of life’s hardships and blessings, to encourage you when you need guidance, to honor you, and to love you unconditionally. Today, we join as one, and I cannot wait to embark on this life long journey with you by my side.

STYLE 20   I, ___ take you, ____ to be my best friend, my faithful partner, my husband/wife and my one true love.  I promise to encourage you and inspire you and to love you trulythrough good times and bad.  I will forever be there to laugh with you, to lift you up when you are down and to love you unconditionally through all of our adventures in life together. I’m proud to tell the world that I choose you for life.

STYLE 21(Especially appropriate for a second marriage)      ___, because of you, I laugh, I smile, I dare to dream again. I look forward with joy to spending the rest of my life with you, caring for you, nurturing you, being there for you in all that life has for us, and I vow to be true and faithful for as long as we both shall live.

STYLE 22   (Especially appropriate for a second marriage)     ___, I offer you the autumn of my life, brisk and vibrant. I promise to be a companion worthy of your precious friendship. I pledge to you compassion in good times and bad, encouragement in sickness and health. It is my desire that our life together includes our large circle of friends and loving families. While we cherish the memories of our individual pasts, we will create new experiences and memories in our new life together.

In addition to the above vows, either of these Vows of Support may be added:

Now that you have heard ___ and ___ say their vows, do you, their family and friends, promise from this day forward to encourage them and love them, to give them your guidance, and to support them in their marriage? If so, answer “We do.”
The guests respond, “We do.”

Every person present here represents an opportunity for love and support of ____ and ____’s marriage.  Now that you have heard ____ and ___ exchange their vows, do you, their family and friends, promise to encourage and support them in creating a strong and vital marriage?   If so, answer ‘We do.’”
